Thinking of Becoming a Councillor

Why become a Councillor?
Councillors are elected by the community to represent the interests of local people. Being able to help the people you serve can be a very fulfilling role. Councillors get to sit on a number of different committees and help make decisions that shape the future of the borough. You can download our handy guide lower down this page.

Do I need any qualifications to become a councillor?
You do not need any formal qualifications but you must be at least 18 years of age on the day of nomination. Generally, you must also live, work or own a property in the borough.

How can I get more information about being a councillor?
You can find lots of useful information on the various pages of this website – you may want to attend one of our meetings to see for yourself what councillors do. There is a link to our calendar of meetings below.

How do I become a councillor?
First of all you need to become a candidate. To do this you need to be nominated by local electors and you need to have declared that you accept the nomination. Please see the link below for the eligibility criteria and election nomination process.
